Many military heroes came to prominence during the American Civil War. Each one has his own story, but there are few more compelling than that of Major General Winfield Scott Hancock. West Point educated, his experience as an infantry officer during the Mexican War inspires and excites Hancock to forego the study of law and pursue a career as a professional soldier. Passionately loved by his wife and family, revered by his soldiers, and feared by his enemies, he stands as the War of Rebellion's premier Union corps commander. During the Rebellion Grant, Meade, and McClellan, who referred to him as “Hancock the Superb,” continually call upon Hancock, who by the force of his presence could change the tide of battle. Sherman brings him to the Great Plains after the Civil War but with a different outcome. Hero to the nation, he is the Democratic Party's presidential candidate in 1880, though he cared little for politics. Winfield's story is one of dedication to the country, the Constitution, and a lifetime of service. What if victory for the Union Army and the Nation rested upon your shoulders? OnLine Book Club: Book of the Day, 15 March 2020 - "The story was both fascinating and gripping from the first page. What I like most was that the author convincingly portrayed both strengths and weaknesses of Winfield. This was a superb book to read. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I heartily recommend it to all ardent fans of historical fiction books." - OnLine Book Club "The demonstrated depth of the characters engages the reader in each event. It cannot be emphasized enough how thorough the consideration of historical elements is throughout the writing. Kelly's voice is brilliant and articulate as he manages to capture an impressively wide scope of the time period and its occupants." The OnLine Book Club It began with a simple request. Would I present a short talk on Winfield Scott Hancock to my Senior Service College classmates as we toured Gettysburg? I was so intrigued researching the short study that it became a five year quest to capture the general's life in a novel. Although many non-fiction books exist, historical fiction provided the pathway to exploring plausible actions and conversations that would shine light on Hancock, and, in many cases, on commanding officers under whom he served and his subordinates. Loved by his family, revered by his soldiers, and feared by his enemies, I found a man with unbelievable courage, charisma, and panache. Being a soldier myself, I visited Hancock's grave in Norristown, Pennsylvania.  "I hope I've done well, Sir."  "Hancock the Superb."
