Through oral history vignettes, Evelyn Benson succeeds in capturing the ambience of a small town in the Pacific Northwest - its people, their problems, their secrets and day-to-day happenings. With each story, young readers will learn something new, and old-timers will experience a flood of nostalgia. The author's folksy way of telling stories immediately engages readers of all generations. In this sequel to her popular first book, the reader will: CHEER with the convent girls as their classmate out-sprints the nuns to elope with her true love. - JOIN the excited children to watch the ‘chain gang’ building a brick road. - HEAR a Rocky Mountain trapper tell how a vicious animal stalked him on his trap-line. - SHARE the desperation and helplessness of many families in the Great Depression. - LEARN the importance of CASH to a family on a camping trip before credit cards. - FEEL the indignation when a ‘lunatic asylum’ opened in a single-family neighbourhood. - WITNESS the author’s close call with a 300-lb. intruder. - LISTEN to ‘gossip’ on a multi-family shared phone line. Evelyn Benson is uniquely qualified to author this book because she lived many of the events herself. Her middle-class family has lived in the same town since 1893. Five generations have lived in the same house where many of the stories take place. Although her town is in British Columbia, Canada, it could be a small town anywhere in North America. Most photos in this book were taken by the author's father who bought his first camera in 1904. Over fifteen hundred of his negatives were gifted to hertowm’s Archives in 2013 and are now displayed as the Sangster Collection on the New Westminster City website.
