The dog, which John dubs "Duke" in honor of John Wayne, turns out to be a first-class waterfowl dog. To build bridges with his son, John's dad wants to take up hunting with John and Duke, but John discovers he has mixed feelings about killing ducks. Meanwhile, a bully at school is tormenting John and claiming that John actually stole the dog. John can't go anywhere without bumping into the bully and his sidekick who make his life miserable. When Duke turns up sick, John is sure the bully is behind it. John's mother seeks to help John through these trying times by helping him to turn to his faith.
