Excerpt from A History and Genealogy of the Groves Family in America, Descendants of Nicholas La Groves of Beverly, Mass: Compiled From the Town Records, Church Records, County and Town Histories, Revolutionary War Records, Family Papers, Genealogies, Traditions and Other Authentic Records In constructing this genealogy, I have followed what I consider a most simple system of connection between the various listed families. By consulting the numbers opposite each name, the reader will discover that he or she can readily trace out any lineage either forward or backward. The names are numbered consecutively from the first an cestor to the last person listed. Where a' second number appears in parenthesis, that same person is also listed in another place. Should the number in the parenthesis be larger than the other number, thename will appear further on in the book. If the. Number happens to be of a smaller nature the person will be found listed further back in the history. The reader should also observe that the index used in this genealogy refers to the numbers appearing before the names and not to pages in the book. In the writing of this little history I have tried to be strictly ac curate but nevertheless there will be found errors in many places and I hope the reader will bear with me the mistakes herein found. In conclusion I wish to state that I have had the hearty co-opera tion of many kinsmen in the writing of this genealogy and to them much credit is due for the success of this book. I am sure that many of the descendants will rejoice with me to see the old records as well as the new, placed in a permanent form. As a final word I might say that I wish that I could personally thank each kinsman who has helped me in this work but as that is rather impossible, I can only extend to them my hearty thanks and sincere appreciation.
