This study argues that the establishment of the millennium binding of Satan and the vindication of the saints in Revelation 20:1-6 are cohesively linked with Jesus's victorious battle in Revelation 19:11-21. The major implication of this analysis views both these events as consequent effects of Christ's victory at the eschatological battle. Applying systemic functional linguistics and discourse analysis of cohesion, this study advances critical scholarship on the Book of Revelation by offering the first fully sustained answer to this frequently debated question regarding Satan's binding from a modern linguistic approach.   CONTENTS   Acknowledgments List of Figures and Tables Abbreviations Introduction 1 Approaches to the Millennium Binding of Satan  1 Introduction  2 Historical-Temporal Interpretations  3 Non-Temporal Interpretations  4 Critical Approaches to the Book of Revelation  5 Conclusion 2 A Model of Koine Greek Discourse Analysis  1 Introduction  2 Advances in Greek Linguistics  3 Discourse Analysis  4 Systemic Functional Linguistics  5 Textual Meanings  6 Conclusion 3 Cohesive Harmony: Cohesive Ties and Chains  1 Introduction  2 Componential Ties and Cohesive Chains in Rev 19:11-20:6  3 General Observations  4 Conclusion 4 Cohesive Harmony: Chain Interactions  1 Introduction  2 Chain Interactions in Rev 19:11-20:6  3 Modified Cohesive Harmony Index  4 Conclusion 5 Information Flow: Clauses, Sentences, Paragraphs, and Sections  1 Introduction  2 Clause Thematization in Rev 19:11-20:6 (Prime and Subsequent)  3 Sentence Thematization in Rev 19:11-20:6 (Theme and Rheme)  4 Semantic Boundary Markers in 19:11-20:15  5 Topicality in 19:11-20:6 (Topic and Comment)  6 Prominence and the Binding of Satan (20:1-3)  7 Conclusion 6 Information Flow: Discourse of the Book of Revelation  1 Introduction  2 The Three Adversaries of God  3 Satan's Progressive Banishment  4 The Saints' Vindication  5 Conclusion 7 Conclusion Appendix 1: Historical Shifts in the Millennial Debate Appendix 2: The Identity of Those Seated on Thrones in Revelation 20:4 Bibliography Index This work is relevant for the academic researcher interested in linguistic biblical studies of the New Testament as well as critical interpretation of the Book of Revelation.
