The above words in the book, ultra-emotional words were expressed publicly by the understandably grieving parent of Amn Schindler. Her perspective was printed in a San Antonio newspaper with a potential audience of about one million readers. This communiqué was intended for very specific individuals that may or may not have received the intended message. Regardless of the obvious, original intent, this scape serves as a perfect setup for the story about to unfold from my perspective, and the factually informed interpretation of key events and actions of individuals recorded on the pages that follow. Two formal (two star directed and four star directed), commander directed investigations failed to fully answer several very basic and key questions: How did this sick recruit pass through initial medical screening and get into the Air Force? Most importantly, specifically how did this sick airman, who told others around him (to include his parents) he was not well and sought professional medical treatment on three separate occasions, get to field training undetected? Was he neglected and abused as his family believed? If so, who was responsible for the neglect and abuse? Armed with the pertinent information of his medical condition, who was in the best position to intervene on his behalf? Why were his vital organs harvested and donated before his life consuming illnesses could be fully identified and analyzed? However, in the personal search for answers there was a startling revelation that actually became pristine after a painstaking and painful, in depth analysis of both investigations was conducted. From the results of the first commander directed investigation, the generals (and their lawyers) involved realized that the United States Air Force had an incredible, critical vulnerability related to this fatality to protect…though the Feres Doctrine applied. The second investigation was secretly intended to serve as a smokescreen and shield for the protection of the institution’s longstanding, medical and training staffing vulnerability unexpectedly exposed by the investigations. Family, Congressional, and media pressure subsequently drove bizarre behavior from the institution’s generals as they and their lawyers attempted to resolve this embarrassing, and “potentially” financially liable situation. Unfortunately, they succeeded at protecting the institution financially, but did so an extremely dishonest and shameful manner. For unjustifiable reasons, the situation involving Amn Micah Schindler remains complicated and controversial to this day. Two general officer sponsored investigations served not to resolve related questions, but to create a distorted perception in the minds of those who were only exposed to the “spin” stories posited by both the media and the United States Air Force. There was far more to the chain of events than the family and reading public were even remotely aware. Invisible and seemingly unconnected lives were negatively touched in untold ways by extreme “organizational violence” caused and perpetuated by the corporate Air Force leadership. Though the total emotional or administrative impact to everyone involved could not be adequately captured in these pages, the intended attempt of this effort is to expose the reader to the meticulously assembled facts and full range of personal emotions through my lens.
