Suffering Shapes Our Lives Pain will make a difference in your life, like it or not. Suffering squeezes and shapes us for better or worse. Why, Do We Need A Primer On Pain ? “ A Primer On Pain is an important book, which I believe will stand the test of time. Drawing on both scholarly and popular sources, Scott Camp tackles the problem of human suffering. He does not offer simplistic or glib answers ... Rather, he offers hope to those in pain and provides ways to cope when it knocks at our door.” (from Foreword by Allen Streett) This is the kind of book you read through and underline again and again. - This is the kind of book you buy for a hurting friend. The Primary Sources of our Pain. Knowing the source of our pain determines our response. Chapter 1 focuses on the pain caused by others, the issue of victimization. Joseph was sold into slavery and placed in prison but emerged stronger. Two chapters are devoted to Satan, the epitome of evil whose goal is “to kill, steal, and destroy” (John 10:10). When faced with pure evil how should we respond? Chapter 4 reminds us that some suffering is self-inflicted, the result of our own sinful choices, as in the case of King David. Chapter 5 points to this fallen world in which we live as a source of pain. Pain is a reality, woven into the fabric of this “present age” and touches us all. Persecution is a special category of pain reserved for saints living under oppressive regimes. From the apostles up to the present, believers have been crucified, burned, tortured, and beheaded for their faith. Study Questions at the end of each chapter are for personal or small group study. But This Book is Filled With Good News! This book is filled with encouragement, real-life stories, pithy statements, biblical illustrations, and practical advice on how to face pain. You will be moved to tears and then to laughter. But most of all, you will feel God’s love and comfort. If you are sick or sad, if you have been wronged or betrayed, if you have suffered for your commitment to Jesus, or if you simply struggle one day at a time to survive, this book is for you. “A Primer On Pain will be the best and most practical book you will read this year.” (Allen Street) Pain in the Midst of a Pandemic “I am writing this primer in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, perhaps the most lethal virus in 100 years. All of us have been impacted and have felt the pain of over one million deaths worldwide at the time of this writing.” (Scott Camp) Endorsed by dozens of Christian leaders including Frank D.
