Most Christians in the modern Western Church, when asked, “What is the ultimate hope of a Christ-follower,” are likely to say something like, “My soul will go to heaven when I die to be with Jesus eternally.” But is that what the Bible really says is our ultimate hope as Christians? Getting this wrong impacts how we celebrate Easter and author Bob Johnson thinks our celebration has gotten seriously off track. Perhaps a retired pastor “going rogue” can counter the centuries of tradition and get readers back on track with the consistent biblical message. Drawing on the work of scholars such as N. T. Wright, J. Richard Middleton, and others, Bob shows how new creation, i.e., a redeemed earth populated by bodily resurrected Christ-followers, is what the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, really points us toward as our ultimate hope. After reviewing hope and expectations in both the Old and New Testaments, and how new creation emerges as our ultimate hope, he also traces how this hope got lost and replaced by immortality of the soul in the history of the Western Church. He ends by suggesting ways we can get our celebration of Easter back where it ought to be – focused on the new creation.
