Anyone who cooks and bakes will be attracted to it. -- Betsy Faga, President, North American Millers' Association, June 29 2000 Little did I know, ten years ago when I embarked upon this venture, that my research would unveil bound volume sets of the American Miller, a monthly newspaper, and the Northwestern Miler, published weekly, dating from their inception in 1873. Numerous flour milling journals were in existence in the late 1800's, but by the middle of the 1900's only these two remained. Millers and bakers throughout America submitted stories and informative articles to these predominate publications. Their wives sent in their favorite poems, passionately depicting their romance with baking and affectionate recollections of milling's past. The American Miller's reign lasted 100 years. These fascinating and highly significant publications formed the foundation of my work. A Romance With Baking is a nostalgic journey back to the kitchen where Karol Redfern Hamper has romanticized the basics. A culmination of the author's twenty years experience as a professional baker, the recipes in the book capture the essence of what baking is about. It is a rich book of history, a beautiful picture book and an engaging book of poetry. A must for anyone's collection! (Shirley Collins) The interests of the flour milling industry have been represented by its trade association, the Millers' National Federation (recently merged to form the North American Millers' Association), since 1902. Thus, as an association we commend Karol Redfern Hamper for the personal dedication she has put into the development of this historical book. This lovely baking book will preserve the rich history of the wheat milling industry and be a treasure to those companies whose history she has captured and to the industry in general.
