Bridgens' Atlas of Lancaster Co., Penna. (1864) is a landmark work in American cartographic history, recognized as the second county atlas published in the United States. Surveyed by H.F. Bridgens and assistants and published by D.S. Bare of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the atlas was engraved and printed by Jas. McGuigan's Lithographic Establishment of Philadelphia. Its maps were produced from actual ground surveys, lending the work a precision and authority that distinguished it from contemporary productions. This facsimile reprint makes available one of the most visually distinguished county atlases of the Civil War era. Bridgens' work is noted for its elegant cartography and original full hand-painted color — a combination that has made it a sought-after reference for historians, genealogists, and collectors with an interest in Lancaster County and Pennsylvania history. This is a full color reprint. Note that the images do have smudges and in some cases water stains where they appeared in the original book.
