Simple
Hold the reel in your left hand. The brake lever is spring loaded and is activated by your left thumb.
Near the bottom is an indexed knob with a R and a L to activate the brake ratchet.
Turn it to the "L" to engage the one way ratchet brake. This allows you to wind in the kite but will not release any line.
Turning to the knob to the "R" disengages the brake and it is totally freewheeling. Mind you there is still the thumb brake for you to use.
