This volume is one of several books by the author featuring prominent Ayrshire breeders and their herds of the past and will be part of a series. We begin with the American Woolen Mills at Shawseen Village, Andover, Massachusetts. The American Woolen Company owned sixty mills, had capital of $90,000,000 and employed 40,000 workers and had an Ayrshire herd. John Winant and his wife Constance Rivington Russell owned Edgerstoune Ayrshires. John Winant held positions in New Hampshire, national, and international politics. He was the 60th governor of New Hampshire from 1925 to 1927 and 1931 to 1935. Winant also served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom during most of World War II. Lippitt Farm was one of the Ayrshire breed’s most prominent herds and was established in 1916 when Robert L. Knight went to the first Eastern States Exposition in search of the breed of dairy cattle that would come to Lippitt Farm. The Knight family founded Lippitt Manufacturing Company during the Revolutionary War and established Fruit of The Loom, the world’s most prominent millinery company. Percival Roberts Jr., was born in 1857 into a family of wealth, prestige and privilege. He became president of US Steel Corporation and established Penshurst Farm, one of the breed’s most important herds. Percival Roberts and his wife built a palatial 75-room mansion on the farm at Narberth, Pennsyvania in 1901. When an incinerator was built in near the mansion in 1939, they moved to a large suite at the Bellvue Strafford Hotel in Philadelphia, sold their possessions and paid a wrecking firm for $1,000 to demolish the mansion. Hugh Chisholm founded Strathglass Farm at Port Chester, New York. The Chisholm family’s ownership of a large publishing and paper business, light and power companies as well as banks and railways in Portland, Maine made them a dominant figure in Maine industry.
