You don’t take it apart.
You spin it until the arrow lines up with the hole.
Then you just feed about ten feet of line on each side and spin it.
It spools up as you spin.
If you have leftover line inside the spool you will need to take the unit off to empty the line.
You are supposed to be able to press-in the panels on the side enough to clear the retaining ledge to free the top of the unit to pull out the spool.
NOTE: you have to do this on both sides!
