As a physiotherapist and the creator of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT), the late Robin McKenzie is one of the most well-regarded physiotherapists in the world. His MDT method is based on a chance discovery that shaped Robin’s career and the rest of his life. Although initially met with skepticism and even ridicule, Robin’s form of treatment was eventually proven to be effective, accepted by the medical community, and eventually taught all over the globe. Not only was his form of treatment effective, but it put control into the patient’s hands, giving them the education and skills to treat mechanical pain on their own.  Find out about the struggles Robin faced in his career and the events and decisions that led to his success. With amusing memories of his childhood, youth and his student life, this autobiography offers Robin's account of family and practice in Wellington, New Zealand and fills out the background to the development of his Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy. This book will both entertain and give readers pause for reflection on many matters. The McKenzie Institute International promotes and trains clinicians world-wide and patient education and self-treatment continues to be fostered through McKenzie’s books Treat Your Own Back and Treat Your Own Neck . The former, now published in 18 languages, has sold over five million copies since 1981. Fifty years ago in his physiotherapy practice in Wellington, New Zealand, McKenzie observed an accidental treatment success and began studying what he had seen. His subsequent success in relieving and curing numerous patients of debilitating pain encouraged him to share his knowledge with his colleagues and the medical profession in New Zealand and Internationally. The obstacles he encountered seemed insurmountable. In this compelling autobiography we share this very bumpy journey with the author – the disappointments and injustices – but we also delight in his perseverance and the success which begins just as he starts accepting he has failed. Robin McKenzie , CNZM, OBE, FCSP (Hon), FNZSP (Hon), Dip MDT, Dip MT For over 50 years, The McKenzie Method® has put the power in the patient's hands, utilizing education and self-treatment strategies to provide long-lasting relief from pain. The late Robin McKenzie was a renowned spinal expert and an authority on the treatment of lower back and neck pain. His method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT) is taught by clinicians around the world. MDT, along with his heralded series of books, DVDs, rolls and supports, has helped hundreds of thousands of people achieve freedom from back, neck, shoulder and knee pain. At the end of the 1960s a few of my fellow therapists from around the country came to observe my methods as well. Some recognized that my system of diagnosis and treatment was better than anything else they had been taught, including spinal manipulation procedures that had absorbed everyone’s interest in recent years. Before long there were several colleagues, including Mark Laslett, Ace Neame and Paula van Wijmen, applying the same diagnostic and treatment methods. But even with staunch support from these friends in the profession there was no great clamour from NZMTA or the Physiotherapy Society to learn more.
