Huddled underneath an overcast sky on a chilly October afternoon at Fenway Park in Boston, an anxious crowd looked on with rapt attention. It was the seventh inning, and the home team was clinging to a 3-2 lead against the Houston Astros; They just needed a few more outs from their ace lefty, Chris Sale, who was pitching in relief on short rest to spare what was a beleaguered Red Sox bullpen. And so far, he had fired three scoreless innings. But he ran into trouble in the sixth and put the tying and go-ahead runs on base. The next batter was Marwin González, a switch-hitter batting right. The crowd’s tension grew exponentially as the shadow of the Monster in the ancient stadium’s short left field seemed to creep closer and closer with each passing pitch. Astros’ third baseman, Alex Bregman, observed intently from the on-deck circle. Sale was one of the game’s best. Seemingly all arms and legs, the tall lefty had a unique delivery that made him extraordinarily difficult to hit. The third baseman knew he had to watch closely to pick up on anything that might give him an advantage. The first pitch from Sale to Gonzalez was a slider on the outside corner called a strike. Gonzalez flinched and turned to say a few words to the umpire. Bregman nodded as if agreeing with his teammate; the pitch was off the plate, and if the umpire was going to call that a strike, the Astros were in for a long day. After bouncing a slider in the dirt for a ball, Sale followed up with a fastball on the hands that González fouled off. The tall, slim southpaw got out of the jam by getting Gonzalez to strike out on a sweeping slider down and in. It was an impossible pitch to hit, and Bregman thought it was almost certainly a ball, at least from his vantage point. Did you enjoy this excerpt?
