Alexander, a little boy with a big imagination, takes his mother on a voyage in his magic boat PreSchool-K-- Alexander and his loving, supportive family were first introduced in Alexander and the Dragon (Clarkson N. Potter, 1988). Once again he uses his imagination, this time piloting his mother on a sea cruise to the other side of the world with two pushed-together armchairs. When they land on an island occupied by three stranded pirates, he knows just what to do. Heading home, a storm overtakes their magic boat, but Alexander gets them through safely. The transition between the real and the imaginary world is nicely achieved. The story is a testimony to how far one can go with just a few everyday props. Craig's line and full-color illustrations are bright and cheerful with much attention paid to detail. The focus of this book is on the mother/son relationship, which is strong and comfortable. --Martha Topol, Interlochen Public Library, MI Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
