Amazon Jungle Spirit tells the story of Jay Narayan’s introduction to the mystical world of shamanism and Ayahuasca – the Amazonian Spirit Vine, Ancestral Vine, or Vine of the Dead. These events, from 2005 in the Peruvian Upper Amazon, became his roots and foundation of an ongoing shamanic apprenticeship. When the author first heard of Ayahuasca as being the doorway to the Spirit World, he felt called to pass through it with the hopes of finding something genuinely transcendental on the other side. Amazon Jungle Spirit is one of the rare jungle memoirs that takes us into the house upon which that portal is built: la Dieta, the Amazon shamanic Master Plant Diet. After a series of Ayahuasca ceremonies with shamans from the Shipibo tribe, the author spent one month living on an isolated property on the Upper Ucayali River, practising his first medicine plant Diet. The remarkable gifts he received during this period, along with his experiences with Ayahuasca, would begin to open his mind to the existence of these enigmatic realms beyond ordinary perception. “Jay Narayan’s story is a refreshing and engaging glimpse into the world of Amazon curanderos (healers) and Western apprentices. At its heart, this book also describes the journey of a humble seeker through a truly magical world of healing.” Michael Sung: founder of PlantDieta.
