An attachment-based model of "parental alienation" defines the construct from entirely within standard and established psychological principles and constructs. The pathology of "parental alienation" represents the trans-generational transmission of attachment trauma from the childhood of the parent to the current family relationships mediated by the narcissistic and borderline personality processes of the parent. In Professional Consultation the pathology traditionally described as "parental alienation" is defined at a professional level to assist mental health professionals in assessing, diagnosing, and treating this complex psychological and family pathology.
