Featuring the late Bob Scriver's award-winning Rodeo Series of sculpture, AN HONEST TRY, now in its second printing, is evidence of the creative genius that has thrust the Browning, Montana artist into an elite class of master sculptors. Splendidly photographed by renowned photographer Asger Mikklesen, and reproduced in color and sepia tone, the Rodeo Series reflects all the action and nobility of the Western drama called rodeo. To turn the pages of this volume is akin to a whiff of sagebrush and a top seat on the corral fence which sparked an emotional upheaval in Scriver: "I came to see that these rodeo cowboys were real Americans - the last in the tradition of the Old West. They pay their own way - win, lose or draw - asking only for an even break. All they want is 'An Honest Try'." The late Bob Scriver was born in 1914, in the Blackfoot Indian Reservation town of Browning, Montana. He attended North Dakota State Teachers College and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Vandercook School of Music in Chicago. After teaching school music in Browning, Scriver pursued a career as a professional trumpet player. He later started a taxidermy business in Browning which was to create the foundation for his sculpturing career. Beginning as a sculptor at age 46, Scriver rose to greater heights than most sculptors achieve in a lifetime. He was elected a member of the Cowboy Artists of America and the National Academy of Western Art. Both have accorded him their highest awards for excellence. One of his most cherished honors is membership in the Rodeo Cowboy Association bestowed upon him by the RCA for immortalizing rodeo in his sculpture. A small replica of Scriver's heroic-size sculpture of the late Bill Linderman, known as King of Rodeo Cowboys, is presented each year to the RCA's "All Around World Champion Cowboy" by The National Cowboy Hall of Fame.
