An Unexpected Journey continues the story begun in my first book; SECOND SON/FORTUNATE ONE. SECOND SON/FORTUNATE ONE, published in 2016, ended with the statement that the journey continues; and indeed it has. Much has transpired since. Some good, some not so good, including the COVID-19 pandemic that appears to have lasting effects, some yet to be determined but most probably, another vaccination in the growing arsenal of pharmaceutical preventives to serious illness. Among the experiences related in this book is my deeply personal battle against a silent and devastating mental condition known as PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I relate my journey into that dark space and the measures I took to try to lessen its effects upon me and those around me. I have dedicated this second book to my wife Cathy, because it’s been her battle as well; she’s been with me through it all She’s earned the campaign ribbon with the oak leaf cluster for commendable service in my campaign to fight the Vietnam War that still rages within me. Many Vietnam Veterans like myself, were exposed to all manner of warfare and misfortune, including exposure to lethal chemical weapons like Agent Orange whose lingering legacy often includes compromised immunity that increases our vulnerability to viral infections like COVID-19. Many veterans attest that we were killed in Vietnam; we just have not died yet. This book is not intended as a guide for the treatment of PTSD. I am not a trained professional therapist; nor do I hold any credentials for rendering medical advice or service. This is only a chronicle of my experience.
