FLANDERS, March 1915. Elsie Knocker and Mairi Chisholm, both avid members of the British Motor Gypsy Club, volunteer for service in the Flying Ambulance Corps, created by Major Hector Munro to spirit the wounded from the Flanders battlefields to field hospitals in the rear. The two young women are joined by Lady Dorothy Fielding, the wife of the Earl of Denbigh, and a beautiful, 22-year old American nurse, Helen Gleason. But mere weeks after their deployment to Flanders, they discover the awful truth: what's killing the soldiers is not their injuries, but the horrendous, three-mile drive over unpaved, rutted roads to the rear. When the British Army Medical Corps refuses to acknowledge the problem, the four women take matters into their own hands - by setting up their own, unauthorized dressing station right on the front line. For the next three years, they battle not only German artillery and gas attacks, but also the British military establishment itself, determined to "put these women in their place" and shut down their post. Only by virtue of their heroism do the "Four Angels of Pervyse" persevere, aided by a local nobleman, Baron de T'Serclaes, who has deeply and irrevocably fallen in love with Elsie. Inspired by true characters and events, ANGELS IN FLANDERS is a riveting and deeply moving saga of love, passion and bravery in the midst of some of the worst carnage the world has ever seen. Angels in Flanders is written by best-selling author and award-winning screenwriter Jean-Pierre Isbouts. His most recent books include National Geographic's The Biblical World (2007) and Young Jesus (2008). Angels in Flanders is inspired by the true story of four young women who operated an illegal dressing station for wounded soldiers in the village of Pervyse, Belgium during World War 1. I discovered the story while conducting research in the Imperial War Museum in London in 2003, and it has fascinated me ever since. I first wrote a screenplay for a feature film, and then decided to adapt the screenplay to a book of historical fiction.   Consequently, Angels in Flanders is based on seven years of scrupulous research into virtually all aspects of World War 1, including the medical services, the principal commanders on both sides of the conflict, and the rapidly evolving military technology. While the dialog is fictitious, the broad outlines of the story are based on actual events. Elsie Knocker, Mairi Chisholm, Dorothy Fielding and Helen and Arthur Gleason are all historical characters, and many of the astonishing adventures described in the book, such as their rescue of a German pilot trapped in No Man's Land, did take place. Both Elsie and Mairi were knighted by King Albert I for their bravery, and Elsie did marry a Belgian aristocrat, Harold Baron de T'Serclaes, ending the war as a Baroness.   Most importantly, Angels in Flanders marks a unique moment in time when women emerged from their Victorian domesticity to fill positions and occupations vacated by conscripted men, thus launching the 20th century women's emancipation movement that would ultimately grant them full equality. Jean-Pierre Isbouts is a historian, a best-selling author and an award-winning screenwriter. His most recent books include the bestseller National Geographic's The Biblical World and In the Footsteps of Jesus (National Geographic), Discovering Walt (Hyperion), Charlton Heston's Hollywood (GoodTimes) and The Mona Lisa Myth (Pantheon). His films include Operation Valkyrie (History Channel); The Quest for Peace (Hallmark) and Walt: The Man Behind the Myth (Disney/ABC).
