Kaleo is skilled in all good things Hawaiian, from surfing at the shore to hiking the high mountain, but his talents hold little monetary value in the modern world. Beautiful Emma dances hula on the sunset cruise where she is within reach of many intrigued, successful men, visiting Hawaii from all over the world. The local ranch manager also has eyes for her. He’s in charge of plans to log the koa trees high above Kaleo’s family banana farm. Emma loves life with Kaleo. His heart and humor have been more than enough, but after ten years together, she’s ready—she’s been ready— for marriage and a family. With his commitment, she’d be happy living in the poverty of his paradise and a house with no bathroom. Without it, she wonders if she is wasting her best years. Kaleo gathers high mountain flora for the lei makers in town as his family has done for generations. Over time they developed a deep spiritual connection with the ‘alalā, or Hawaiian Crow, a highly intelligent and endangered raven found only in Hawaii. The situation turns dangerous when powerful interests threaten the last ‘alalā living in the wild, the koa forest, and Kaleo’s very existence. With only his family’s knowledge handed down through generations, Kaleo must overcome his rival’s thirst for power, greed and even desire for his woman or risk losing everything.
