Although heirloom Vicia faba does not have too many pests or insects, it is known to be susceptible to leaf spotting diseases such as mosaic viral disease, bacterial blight, and slight anthracnose. Allow soil to dry between watering.
All parts of the fava plant are edible. For greens, pick leaves when they are still young and a bright green flavor. This will be much earlier than when the pods themselves are ready for harvest.
For fava bean shoots, soak the seeds for 24 hours; sow close together; cover with a layer of compost about 1/2". Water and keep compost damp (but not wet); put the seeds in a bright place to grow. Harvest when 3 – 5 inches tall; above the lowest leaf node for next harvest.
