But with their success comes tragedy, as their wealth comes at a high cost for their family life. Author Glen Cao became a household name in China with the publication of this novel, serialization in a leading newspaper and the subsequent TV series based on the novel. He was born in Beijing in 1947. After graduating from the Central Conservatory of Music he became a cellist with the Central Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra.
