You’ve got questions? Walter Martin’s got answers. “The Bible Answer Man” responds to over 100 questions on such topics as the Trinity, the Bible, the Church, daily Christian living, and others, culled from his radio show and live events. Compiled and edited by Dr. Martin’s daughter, Jill Martin Rische. Dr. Walter Ralston Martin (1928 - 1989), was a Christian apologist who founded the Christian Research Institute in 1960 specializing in information in both general Christian and counter-cult apologetics. He is best known for his long-running radio program, “The Bible Answer Man,” and as author of the definitive work on cults, The Kingdom of the Cults . Q: How can I be sure I’m “walking in the Spirit”? To walk in the Spirit means to be in conformity to the leading and the will of the Holy Spirit. How can you ascertain this? If you are filled with the love of God; if you have the joy of God’s salvation and the peace that passes all understanding; if you have patience in the midst of tribulation and trials; if you have gentleness and the manifestation of goodness; if you are self-controlled; and if you are exercising faith, then you are walking in the spirit because He will not manifest these fruits unless you are walking with Him. If these things are evident in your Christian experience, you know you are walking with Christ. You know that you have fellowship with each other and that His blood is right now continuing to cleanse you from all sin. Q: Does God punish us, as believers, if we refuse to walk with Him? The carnal mind is at war with God. The world that follows the flesh is God’s enemy, and you can’t be its friend. It is not subject to the law of God—it can never be. So if you are going to let your carnal nature rule your life, you will not be subject to God. You will be subject to punishment. In Romans 8:8 we are told, “They that live in the flesh cannot please God.” That’s terrifying. It means the people whose life is a constant pursuit of the flesh can never please God. Anyone who does not have the spirit of Christ is not Christ’s property. Christians are not carnal, fleshly people—you walk in the Spirit if the Spirit of God dwells in you. The person whose life is dominated by the pursuit of the Spirit is governed by the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus, which is the love of God. They become more than conquerors through Him that loved us. I love Romans 8:9 (nasb)—“You are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.” Q: How do you store treasure in heaven? You do it by prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving. You store treasure in heaven by service to God, by presenting your body as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God. You lay up treasure in heaven when you permit the fruits of the Spirit to blossom in your life: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self‑control” (Gal. 5:22–23). You’re allowing treasure to be stored for you when you allow the Holy Spirit to live in you and work through you to touch the lives of others. So, you want to know how to store treasures in heaven? Obey God now. Let the fruits of the Spirit, the power of the Spirit, and the life of Christ be part of your life. Even a cup of water in the Master’s name will not go without its reward. Let the life of Christ be lived in you.
