Eastern Front: July 11th 1943: 0230hrs Southern Flank, Kursk Offensive: Hill 243 Leutnant Hausser and a bolstered squad return, slumped in exhaustion or deep sleep in the defences across the southern slopes of Hill 243 having spent the previous day taking the heights above them and then strengthening the defences. Given the responsibility of looking after the younger and less experienced troops that had joined GrossDeutschland in preparation for the Citadel offensive, the strain of trying to keep the naïve and excitable teenagers alive appears to be exacting a heavy psychological price on not only the young officer, but also his few surviving companions. The attack the previous day had hardly been Blitzkrieg, the times of élan and sweeping victories long behind a now battered and weakened Wehrmacht. Even if they had broken through the concentrated lines around Hill 243 as in previous years, there were simply too many enemy soldiers and tanks to face in ferocious counterattacks to ensure any victory. Instead, a bloodied battle of attrition had finally secured the first objective, the second target, Hill 247, now left until the next day as the supporting Luftwaffe had to be deployed elsewhere to combat an ever stronger Red Air Force. An army that was used to sweeping charges with Panzer spearheads now only able to advance a couple of kilometres in an enforced punch using the new heavy armour to secure success. As a result of their endeavours, Third Panzer Division in the south was now smashing through enemy defences towards the hills to the north, the soldiers of GrossDeutschland believing they could be afforded a least one night’s rest… However, after a futile evening attack, the Russians have no intention of allowing the Wehrmacht any respite. Launching a counterattack in the hours of darkness, the aim is simple…smash through the elite division to the south, retake their defensive positions and then strike into a scattered and isolated Third Panzer Division driving northwards. As the warning flares and chatter of MG42 machine guns erupt through the darkness, Russian artillery and katyushas open fire on the slopes of Hill 243, thousands of Russian infantry surging forwards and buoyed on by an increase in vodka rations. Awoken by the alarm…Leutnant Hausser and the inexperienced squads under his command may once again have to stumble up the bloodied slopes of Hill 243, but now into an inferno of advancing Russian guns and infantry, consumed with the urge for revenge. To the German High Command, Kursk and victory may still be within their grasp…it just requires determination and one final push to turn misfortune into success on the Russian Front. To the average Wehrmacht soldier along the Russian front, any adventure has long since deteriorated into a personal daily battle for survival.
