Grayson McNabb is a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan. He also kills people. Professionally. After a stretch where the team’s newest relief pitcher has cost the team several wins, Grayson is beside himself. His only solution is to do what he does best. But Grayson discovers not everything is not what it seems, and he now finds himself in a position where he will need to solve a much larger problem. And this time, he will have to try to actually save a life, instead of taking one. Luis Rodriguez isn’t sure who he is these days. But who is he? And will he ever be able to live the dream of Jose Garcia? And will he ever see him mother again? “Blown Save: A Killer’s Guide to Winning” is the third book from Eric Hoffer Award nominated author Karl Kling. Check out his first two books, “The Boys Are Back in Town” and “Takin’ Care of Business”, both part of the Brody James Mystery series, on Amazon. REVIEW: Blown Save—A Killer's Guide to Winning by Karl Kling I really like this book. It's fun, it's fast moving, and, surprisingly educational if I include what I learned about baseball and contract killing. Blown Save is, essentially, two stories that intertwine around baseball. Karl Kling does a stellar job of drawing us into the lives of the main characters. Grayson McNabb is a diehard Chicago Cubs fan. In fact, baseball is the most important thing in Grayson's life—more important than work, friends, romance. His work contract includes a clause stating that he gets time off for baseball, regardless of what else is going on at work. Grayson McNabb is also a sanctioned killer. His handler, Cyclops, is his only friend. We also get to know Luis Rodriquez, a minor league baseball player in the Dominican League. We follow his upward trajectory from Venezuela to the big leagues. His mother Maria is his biggest fan and most ardent supporter. And there's Jose Garcia—a player neck-deep in fraud, owing the local gangsters in Venezuela his entire career. Unexpectedly, these very different lives from very different backgrounds intersect, and the story explodes from there. Kidnapping, intrigue, murder, mayhem, all in the name of baseball—Chicago Cubs baseball to be exact. One of the things that I really like about Blown Save is the matter-of-fact, straight-forward story-telling. The characters do and say what they mean. Grayson, in particular, is scorchingly honest about what he does. There's no soft landing. When his girlfriend asks him what he does, he tells her he's a killer. When Cyclops unexpectedly comes into Grayson's office, and Grayson pulls a gun, Cyclops asks him if he was going to shoot him, Grayson calmly says, "If I had to." And you believe him. There's a lot of great banter—one of the hallmarks of Karl King's writing. I've read both of his previous books ( The Boys Are Back In Town and Takin' Care of Business —check them out!) and the dialogue is one of the things that I enjoy the most. Each character's voice is unique and key to their personality. They become believable. If you like baseball Blown Save—A Killer's Guide to Winning is definitely, definitely, definitely for you. If you consider yourself a diehard fan—same! If you like twists and turns, give it a read. And if you've read Karl Kling's other books, this one is worthy of a look, as well. Enjoy!
