Brandon gets a new puppy, or xiǎo gǒu (小狗), named Dash! Everything is great until Dash's favorite toy, or wánjù (玩具), mysteriously disappears. To make things even stranger, some odd, smeared marks appear where the wánjù (玩具)used to be. Āiyā (哎呀)! Can Brandon and Dash solve the mystery together? This adorable story includes a few Mandarin words with Simplified Chinese characters and Pinyin pronunciation. A fun read for all, especially for families and schools interested in Chinese language and culture. Reviewed by Bruce Arrington for Readers' Favorite Brandon and Dash and the Case of the Missing Wanju by Eugenia Chu is an illustrated children's story for ages 3 and up. It is Brandon's first adventure with his new puppy, Dash. We watch as they learn about each other, play together, and become close friends. One day Brandon notices that Dash's favorite wánjù, or Chinese toy, is missing. So off they go to leave no stone or pet unturned in their merry quest to solve this head-scratching mystery. Can they find the wánjù, or will Dash have to live without it? This book is one of several that Eugenia has written, and this one is about her son and their dog. Chu shares parts of her family life and heritage as she brings these stories to life. But more than this, she builds bridges between cultures that allow readers to understand just a little bit more about the Chinese people. This story helps bring people together from different cultures, allowing a bridge to be formed in our understanding of others. The preface guides readers in pronouncing the Chinese words used in the story. The glossary provides more detail with the Chinese words and their definitions as extra support for the story. Plus there is an interactive fun game to play. In this age of over-information, fake news, and mistrust, I see books like these as pathways to help young readers not only gain an understanding of a culture that is different from theirs but also provide a source for a common theme to be shared. Brandon and Dash and the Case of the Missing Wanju by Eugenia Chu is a story filled with color, humor, and heart. I highly recommend it! Eugenia Chu is an attorney turned stay-at-home mom turned multi-award winning and best selling author. She is Chinese-American and lives on a magical beach in Miami with her husband, Bob, son, Brandon, and dog, Dash. Unable to find children's story books that included Chinese language or culture when Brandon was younger, she began writing them herself. Brandon is the inspiration for all her books. Eugenia enjoys presenting her books at schools, libraries, museums, and festivals. She is an avid reader who delights in writing, traveling, yoga, and drinking too much coffee.Visit https: //linktr.ee/eugeniachu to learn more about the authorand her books, or to schedule an author visit.
