These story lessons tell how Brave Bear became a great chief by learning to: 1) Control his temper & Cooperate with others; 2) Appreciate kindnesses; 3) Respect others; 4) Encourage efforts; and, 5) Stop to think so he could speak-up calmly. Brave Bear stories teach 7 to 12 year-olds these Life Success Skills. Stories are an old way of passing on the wisdom of previous generations, learned from the life experiences. Parents and grandparents who are concerned that the media too often teach that success comes through conflict and conquest may want their children and grandchildren to learn old principles that lasting success comes through self-control, persistent efforts, and cooperation with others. Dr. Bob Peddicord is Clinical and Educational Psychologist who developed Brave Bear stories to teach success skills to 8 to 12 year-old kids. Stories have been presented to students in several Maine schools, thanks to generous Character Education grants from the Maine Department of Education and at the request of several school systems. Bob has great respect for Native American ways and believes we can all learn much from them.
