Bridesburg is located on a bend in the Delaware River in northeast Philadelphia, at the mouth of the old Frankford Creek. Traveling north on the river, the bend gives the illusion of a point of land projecting out into the water, hence the early Colonial name Point-No-Point. In 1800, Joseph Kirkbride envisioned a community at the mouth of Frankford Creek and purchased a large farm for his plan. He laid out lots and roads and operated a ferry across the creek, and with the passing of time, the village reached southward toward Philadelphia. Originally called Kirkbridesburg, the people dropped the "Kirk" and Bridesburg was born. Their interest piqued by stories flowing throughout the community from old-timers, a small group of people got together in 1989 and formed the Bridesburg Historical Society. They charted a course to gather and record the heritage of their community and to acknowledge those who came before them and those who are to follow. The society authored this volume with images from their archives.
