A compilation of short stories about what life was like for a boy growing up in the Kentucky foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, in the years of the Great Depression—a time when the ugly face and the hopeless hands of poverty had a firm grip on most of the families in the region. Where illegal moonshine whiskey flowed as free as water. It’s been said that the place was so remote that only God and the Internal Revenue Service knew where it was located. These stories are true life experiences with some humor and words of wisdom thrown in for good measure. Elmo Lincoln Martin grew up in the foothills of Kentucky just outside of Morgantown. After finishing school, he served in the 99th Infantry Division in World War II, and upon his return began a successful career in the automotive industry. Elmo is now retired and makes his home outside of Knoxville, Tenn., where he regularly works on his golf game and is a contributing writer to the Banner Republican News.

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
