The poems in this book use narrative - free verse as the instrument to express awareness of global human conditions, examined through the microscope of childhood incidents - naivety calling attention to frquently shallow excuses and unresponsiveness to what should be a crisis of consciousness. Often based on true events, unique circumstances are delivered to remind us we are connected by what happensto each other, even just to one person. As a collective, we are changed through individuals and the poems of their experiences. "June Powers uses her words with the precision of a surgeon and the artistry of a painter. Her poems explore the depths of the human condition and the occurrences, large an small, fictional and not, which powerfully and artfully depict (and sometimes explain) such condition. She let's fly her words with the intensity of VanGogh's brush strokes and the beauty of Monet's gardens, often delighting us as we experience her ability to transform herself and thereby, us." Randy Kogel Zucker, painter, photographer, digital artist In 2019, I attended several life changing seminars sponsored by the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy through Arizona State University, in Phoenix. These thoroughly researched discussions served as the spark that lit the fire. The topics ventured into the areas of housing evictions and redlining, healing white supremacy (which has an historically global reach), community outreach and protecting the family, in particular women and children.I continued to research on my own, falling into vast crevices of often barely, or clumsily addressed issues. I have long had a strong interest in current events from the viewpoint of national culture, personal culture, ritual, relationship to surroundings and everyday life. The book  Child, is a product of those concerns. This is a book about how we treat each other.I want to know what people are doing and why - is there a meaning or custom attached to the action, does the family participate or is it an individual experience - is the government involved.I love global information and I am committed to the concept that collectively, we are a ripple effect - tap the shoulder of my friend in Botswana or Lima or Denmark and eventuallyI will feel it. The poems shared in this book are narratives of awareness - a combination of inspiration and true occurrences, examining our position within the human condition. Through the universal theme of childhood, subjects and global cultures are brought to light - Africa, Europe, SouthAmerica, The South Pacific, and the United States present unique situations that remind us, we are all connected and affeted by what is happening to each other.
