Melchizedek has long been regarded as one of the most mysterious persons in the Bible. He is even more puzzling than the enigmatic Enoch, about whom we know so little. Melchizedek is spoken of in comparative terms - greatness - by the author of the book of Hebrews: a greater than Abraham because Abraham tithed to him, a greater because Abraham received blessing from him. Of men born to women, it is arguable that there was never a greater but for the Lord Jesus Christ. The book of Hebrews connects these two men. Christ became an High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek, not Levi, and not Aaron. When we search for "Melchizedek" in the Scriptures, we find him just three times: Genesis 14, Psalm 110 and Hebrews, mostly chapter 7. Christ became an High Priest according to that order because the Lord Himself had sworn to it, binding Himself by a rare vow in Psalm 110. Most fail to identify just when and how that vow was fulfilled. This book provides answers to both. Prophet, Priest and King - this is a rare combination, never occurring again from the person of Melchizedek until our Lord enters the world. In fact, I argue that the Lord could NOT have begun His earthly ministry until that vow was fulfilled, until He had personally entered that order. It was by that order that He mediated the very offering of Himself as the ultimate sacrifice. It continues today in intercessions. He intercedes for you and me. But Psalm 110 adds yet another dimension, Warrior. The Psalmist attaches that quality to the coming Melchizedek Priest. It was David that received that revelation, himself a prophet, a king and a warrior. How fascinating that God selected David to round out the vision of this great eschatological Person. The Melchizedek of old was never reported to be a warrior. David was never a priest. Prophet, Priest, King and Warrior – the Lord Jesus alone will one day fulfill it all. Or has He already? Was not the cross a place where Christ entered into battle? Certainly. There, He used weakness to gain the victory. In the next battle, He will display His strength: The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath. He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries. (Ps 110:5-6) This book sees Christ as the Melchizedekian High Priest in all of these roles.
