Human history reported signs and wonders of strange anomalies and phantom airships or ghost fliers in the sky. The history of modern UFOs begins with Kenneth Arnold’s sighting in 1947. But before them, there were the phantom airships of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During the final decade of the nineteenth century, in the wake of a series of revolutionary technological advances from the telephone to electric lights and the horseless carriage, a form of mass hysteria swept across the United States. It involved tens of thousands of citizens who claimed to have observed airships flying across the country. These vessels were typically described as cigar-shaped with wings or propellers and an attached undercarriage, resembling a crude and smaller version of a modern Goodyear Blimp. Witnesses sometimes claimed that the wings slowly flapped up and down in a bird-like motion. These kinds of flying objects were called “Mystery Airships”, “Phantom Airships,” and “Ghost Airships.” These sightings are best known from a series of newspaper reports originating in the western United States and spreading east during late 1896 and early 1897. This book covers with 50 newspaper reports of the day-by-day main sightings. However, the purpose of this work is not to deal with the authenticity the nature of the 1896-97 sightings, but to treat instead the nature of the newspaper reports of the period.
