About this photograph: This panorama, taken by James Simmons, spotlights the Carolina Hurricanes playing at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina. The franchise originally joined the National Hockey League in 1979, and the Hurricanes were established in 1997, after relocating from Hartford, Connecticut, to North Carolina. Since arriving in North Carolina, the Hurricanes have captured numerous division titles and Eastern Conference championships and, in 2006, they brought North Carolina its first major professional sports championship, capturing the coveted Stanley Cup. The Hurricanes also hosted the NHL All-Star Game in January 2011, with an estimated 138,000 fans taking part in the weekend's festivities.
