Collectively, the 6 living Celtic languages boast nigh on 1.5 million speakers worldwide. Add to that the number of those who admit they’re learners (or even fluent speakers lacking confidence) and the number almost certainly doubles, perhaps even trebles. As wonderful and encouraging as this may appear, the visual aspect of these living languages in daily life is severely lacking. One can argue - and indeed celebrate - that the situation has vastly improved in recent decades with numerous public and private groups making efforts to ensure those living their lives through these ancient languages are afforded the right to do so. It seems also cliché nowadays to those dwelling in one of the six Celtic nations that more can, and certainly should, be done to revitalise the languages. For me, however, waiting for something positive to happen seldom gets stuff done, and when we’re dealing with languages haemorrhaging native speakers by the day and, at the very same time, largely failing to capture the imagination of the young, time also places itself on the opposing team.People need to see these languages. Hear them. Try them. Give them new life and a new home. Understand that there’s a place for them in modern society. But how?Social media most certainly is the new age of communication and my hope for this book is that it gives anyone and everyone the keys to post and communicate - however simply - in these six wonderful languages. This book will never attempt to offer a comprehensive set of grammar and colloquialisms. Nor will it claim to be able to teach every part of the languages it covers. It doesn’t even include a pronunciation guide nor any nouns. I believe that there is, however, enough in these pages for people to both start their journey to fluency, as well as showing how much each language shares between themselves.Let’s be the generation to breathe new life into these ancient tongues. You can read about the ways I brought Welsh (and the other Celtic languages) into my life in my first book, ‘Welsh and I; A Collection of Thoughts and Ideas from a Guy whose Life got Changed by a Language’.
