Chickens Through the Floor takes you on a poetic journey by way of life-spanning narratives, based on the life and times of my father, Marion Upshaw. This culmination of whimsical stories depict what it was like growing up through the sundowning of an eroding Jim-Crow era as a black boy in the Deep East Texas Piney Woods of Nacogdoches County. Marion was a product of a Freedom Colony community called Countyline and these are his stories passed on to me by him and his colorful siblings. He’s my "Huck Finn" of dark skin. The objective of this book is to take my readers on a buck board wagon ride of rhymes, rocking and jarring the mind with the highs and lows of my dad's captivating experiences. Be prepared for low hanging limbs that may knock you out of your seat, then uplift you like the gentle tickles of a refreshing country breeze. You’re in for a treat. So, whether you are city or country folk, strap yourself in by designer belt or hay rope, and take your eyes and imagination for a ride filled with laughs, cries, victories, unity, and hope.
