The new edition of this popular evidence-based guide brings together all the latest knowledge about the forensic assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of childhood maltreatment, with particular emphasis on the current gold standard approach – trauma-focused CBT. As I have previous experience with this series of books, I knew that even though the book was short, it would be dense with information. It s best to approach this series as a reference and glean what you need. I did find that it was quite practical for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in any age group. I have recently started seeing a PTSD patient and have been at a loss. I am happy to announce that the skills I learned from reading this book have completely changed my last few sessions with my PTSD patient. Her mood and functioning have greatly improved and she is pursuing new life goals. I think that anyone who deals with children teachers, coaches, doctors, nurses, etc. should read this book. Reviewed by Vivian Chow, MD, in Medical Psychotherapy Review, 2019 This book is a brief, valuable resource that can serve as an introductory primer for those beginning to learn about maltreatment and as a refresher for experienced professionals wanting up-to-date perspective. --David J. Hansen, PhD, Professor of Psychology, Director of the Clinical Psychology Training Program and the Law-Psychology Program, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE, USA. This brief and concise book is replete with information and astute observations about the nature, context and effects of child maltreatment, which is wisely considered along dimensional, as well as the more usual categorical, lines. The authors succeed in portraying accurately those sequelae which require therapeutic intervention. Using the now necessary evidence-based approach, various forms of treatment are described and their applicability to specific post-abuse difficulties indicated. Case illustrations shed further light on the issues discussed. The book is thus a welcome addition to the child maltreatment literature, and will prove particularly useful to busy practitioners as well as to their managers, who will gain an understanding of the complexity and labor-intensive nature of work in this field. --Danya Glaser, MB BS, FRCPsych, Department of Psychological Medicine, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London, UK Childhood Maltreatment is a brief, evidence-based review of the epidemiology, assessment, and treatment of individuals who have been mistreated in childhood. The focus is on psychotherapy, and the authors succeed in providing an excellent, easy-to-read review of the topic. The use of case vignettes...bring the concepts to life and leave the reader with a true understanding of psychotherapeutic modalities.... The topic of maltreatment is vast and the book is all-encompassing, including not only sexual abuse, but also neglect and physical and emotional abuse.... All family physicians will benefit from the tips given for reporting maltreatment.... The information is relevant and up-to-date, and includes a review of the literature demonstrating cognitive behavioural therapy as perhaps the most effective therapy available for victims. Marjolaine Limbos in Canadian Family Physician, Vol. 54, May 2008 An excellent primer on childhood maltreatment for undergraduate and graduate students in courses in various helping profession fields such as social work, human services, public health, medicine, psychology as well as human development, public administration, and public policy.
