This book covers 47 of the best-known and most historic churches and cathedrals within the Greater London area. It contains over 200 full-color photographs of both the exteriors and interiors of each building, highlighting particular features of architectural and historical significance. With a wealth of fascinating information for both the serious enthusiast and more casual secular visitors, The Churches and Cathedrals of London celebrates a glorious cultural heritage. Stephen Humphrey's authoritative text reveals the history of London's churches and cathedrals as the history of the city itself, and of the centuries of struggle and change that have shaped today's London: from the Great Fire in 1666 (that destroyed over 80 churches), through the upheavals of the Reformation to, more recently, the ravages of the Blitz. Stephen Humphrey is a Londoner by birth and residence, whose interest in architecture and local history began with the citys churches. Having attended both Cambridge and University College London, he is an expert on Londons churches and has written and lectured on them extensively. From 1979 to 1991 he was the Honorary Secretary of the Ecclesiological Society. He has since run his own church tour group and edited the Bulletin of Ecclesiology, with correspondents worldwide. Photographer James Morris specializes in architectural and cultural subjects from around the world, working with architects, publishers, and magazines such as Elle Decoration, House and Garden, Architectural Review, and World of Interiors. He founded Axiom Photographic Agency in London, where he is currently based.
