This beloved fairy tale comes with a bigger glass slipper! This punny twist on the beloved fairytale will delight readers of all ages. Children will enjoy finding similarities between Cinderella and her pachyderm equivalent as she searches for love at the ball of the zebra prince, heir to the throne. With a plethora of funny fur and hooves from across the animal kingdom, including an adorable fairy god-mouse, the lighthearted illustrations serve to highlight the imagination of this fractured fairytale. K-Gr 2—In this reworking of "Cinderella," the heroine is a "pretty pachyderm" who ends up "hoofily ever after" with a zebra prince. De Las Casas sprinkles her version with plenty of alliteration and wordplay (e.g., Cinderellaphant "often felt irrelephant") but closely follows the traditional plot. Jolet's digital art will appeal to young readers who gravitate toward colorful, modern imagery. His Cinderellaphant has cool teal skin, purple hair, and expressive eyes. Although the illustrations are geared toward primary grade audience, the text is full of cultural references and puns—like a line about "junk in this trunk" and a joke about an "elephant in the room"—that seem more appropriate for older readers. It will be hard to find an appreciative audience for this one.—Nora Clancy, Teachers College Community School, New York City With her trademark wit and humor, Dianne de Las Casas transports readers to an animal kingdom far, far away, where the pretty pachyderm, Ellaphant, is quickly transformed into the cinder girl of fairy-tale fame by her unkind stepmother and two awful step-hippos. Taunted and forced to scrub the floors, poor Cinderellaphant tirelessly trudges through her chores, often feeling irrelephant and always dreaming of something better. When the invitations to the Royal Ball arrive, Cinderellaphant is ecstatic! Unfortunately, her stepmother has given her the lion's share of chores to complete, and her party dress doesn't fit. It seems as if her hopes will be dashed. Then, with a swish and a swirl, fate smiles upon her, and Cinderellaphant receives a bit of help from her fairy godmouse. She wins her chance to dance with the prince! Will it be all that she anticipates? Stefan Jolet's whimsical drawings of a royal roan, a baboon band, and festooned raccoons draw out the humor in this adaptation of a traditional fairy tale. While elephants never forget, it's the prince who can't get Cinderellaphant out of his head as he uses her gargantuan glass slipper to find his sole mate.
