There were four patterns of infantry boxes used by Union forces during the Civil War. Quoting original Ordnance Department letters, author Paul Johnson describes the development and subsequent pattern changes to these cartridge boxes that were made throughout the rifle-musket percussion era. Using 175+ photographs from extant examples that show these pattern characteristics, Johnson has finally answered many of the questions concerning these cartridge boxes. There is never-before-released information on the inspection procedures of Civil War accouterments as well as newly found information on the operation of the Ordnance Department just before and during the Civil War. This information will be a must for the collector, museum curator and reenactor alike. One of the most important accoutrements for an infantry soldier during the Civil War was his cartridge box, which was due to the fragile nature of the paper cartridges then in use and the rigors of field service. Johnson, who has spent more than a quarter century studying, collecting, speaking, and writing on the subject, offers his expertise in a thorough investigation. His is the first major work on the topic and certainly invaluable for anyone wishing to identify any cartridge box used by the Union infantry. Here is information on when and where they were issued and for which guns. Nearly 200 photographs are partnered with numerous line drawings. A quick guide is provided for identifying particular examples easily without having to refer to the various chapters of the text. This book should find a ready audience as a result of the recent upsurge of interest in the Civil War among history buffs, collectors, and reenactors.
