The Beefmaster compares in size and taste to the famous Beefsteak tomato with the difference being that the Beefmaster produces longer and heavier yields of its delicious fruits. This massive beefsteak-type tomato with its slightly ribbed skin is huge, with fruits ranging from 6 ounces all the way up to 2 pounds. The Beefmaster is very heavy-bearing tomato plant, with huge yields over a long season on indeterminate vines. Despite their size they are savory and delicious with wonderful meaty flesh and not too heavy on the seeds. With its intense flavor and meaty flesh this tomato is great fresh off the vine or used in pasta sauces and dishes. It is also a good tomato for preserves or frozen for later use. Place tomato plants 18 inches apart in a sunny garden location. A normal well-draining soil with a good watering once a week will keep these Beefmasters in good form. When planting these and all other tomatoes, plant to a soil depth just beneath the first set of leaves. That first set of leaves (called cotyledon-which means the embryonic first leaves) will eventually fall off. Roots will form along the buried stem, establishing a stronger root, thus a stronger plant. Don’t water too late in the evening. You want the plants to dry thoroughly before night. Too many problems with fungus start when you continuously water tomatoes late in the evening. The Beefmaster tomato plant will reach 4-5 feet in height and with the large fruits that it bears, staking or caging is needed.
