When Karen set off to walk Wainwright’s iconic Coast to Coast route, she expected blisters, rain, and perhaps the odd pub lunch – not a complete rerouting of her life. But somewhere between St Bees and Robin Hood’s Bay, something shifted. The footpaths she and her partner, Neil, followed led them somewhere entirely unexpected: a derelict farmhouse halfway up a hill above Keld in Upper Swaledale, the halfway point of the walk across England. They found a new community, a B&B they never meant to run, and a life they didn’t even know they were looking for. Told with warmth, dry humour and an eye for the absurd, Coast to Coast and Halfway Between interweaves the quirks of Dales village life, the joy of long-distance walking, the chaos of renovation, the highs and horrors of hospitality… and above all, the bliss of finding home in the most unlikely of places. A story of footpaths, fate and the glorious unpredictability of starting over – one step at a time.
