In the rail preservation world, you may only have one chance to save a historic locomotive or railcar from being scrapped and lost to history. Acquiring a commuter train locomotive directly from a public transit agency can be particularly challenging. When the North County Transit District, of San Diego county, announced in 2018 that it would be retiring their venerable fleet of F40PHM-2C locomotives from the Coaster Commuter train service, the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association knew that it had to act! This is the story of how the museum saved not one, but two Coaster locomotives from the scrapper's torch. Learn about the challenges facing an all-volunteer non-profit organization as it acquired and moved a 141-ton locomotive by rail and truck to its new home in Campo, California. Many partnerships with outside companies were forged as the organization carefully planned and coordinated the move. Despite missteps and setbacks along the way, the museum ultimately triumphed in bringing Coaster 2103 to Campo in 2022. It is an amazing story you won't want to miss!
