While concept books are traditionally thought of for toddlers and preschoolers, the influx of books with intricate illustrations, interactive participation, complex puzzles, and sophisticated themes has expanded the audience for concept books to elementary, middle, and even older students. Color and Shape Books for All Ages calls attention to more than 450 titles focused on the concepts of color and shape. The purposes of the color and shape books range from simply learning the names of colors or identifying simple shapes, to recognizing intricate geometric shapes, or even understanding how color affects responses, moods, and attitudes. The book is categorized by subject, from science and math to art and illustration. Suggested activities, accompanied by reproducible worksheets, finish each chapter. Includes a bibliography. While this book fills a niche, it is a disappointing effort. Chapters include discussions of board and movable books as well as titles about animals, rhyme and rhythm, social studies, science and math, games, and original stories. One section is devoted to art and illustration in these books. Each chapter contains two sections of narrative: suggestions for using particular color and shape books to cover other subject matter and activities related to these titles. Though Cooper outlines selection criteria in the introduction, the annotated bibliographies are not selective and include many out-of-print titles and trade books of marginal quality. In addition, the activity portions do not highlight titles in bold, so the entire text must be read to find the appropriate information. The preschool activities are too advanced, including coloring small images and writing. Librarians will have to wait a bit longer for a good resource on this topic. Of special value to librarians who cater for the early childhood years, Color and Shape Books for All Ages includes interesting points about art, design and genre for all. This is an excellent selection aid in this specific area. ( Orana ) Cathie Hilterbran Cooper is the District Media Specialist for Adena Local Schools in Ross County, Ohio.
