Jake Burrows has spent fourteen years running from his grief. Now the military has sent him home to heal, and it's the place he's most afraid to be. Jake Burrows is a hero in most people's eyes, but a failure in his own. He has a rocky relationship with his teenage son, no place to consider his own, and a heart closed down to the possibility of love. His battles with PTSD and a bullet wound make his re-entry into civilian life that much harder, leading his family to worry and rally to support him. Shea Kerrigan is a small town teacher with bad luck in love. The only man that has brought a smile to her face in recent months is one serving in a war zone thousands of miles away, through his frequent letters. Her childhood crush and penpal reappearing in town is the last thing she expected, and now she has to be brave enough to fight for what she wants. As Jake struggles to adapt to life outside of the military, and to rebuild a relationship with his son, the residents of Windsor Peak and the Burrows family rally around him. Coming Home: Windsor Peak is about a man who is wounded in the war and comes home to heal mentally and physically. It is an emotionally moving story by Denise Latham that had me hooked from the start until the end. Once I started reading, I could not put it down. I had to know what would happen next, and the suspense kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters were authentic and so relatable. They could have been anyone I know. Jake had a decent support network and was willing to get the help he needed. I enjoyed the growing romance between Jake and Shea. This story is beautifully written and was much more than I expected. I had no idea how challenging it is to reintegrate into family life after serving in the military.
