The testimony that separates the people of this world into two camps, believers and disbelievers, is the statement, Laa-ilaaha-ill-Allah , which means: No one has any right to be worshipped other than Allah. This testimony has two basic pillars of meaning: a negation and an affirmation. All objects of worship are negated. One exception is affirmed; only Allah deserves worship. It is the greatest testimony, one made by Allah, His noble and obedient angels, and the best, most knowledgeable of all people. Allah, the Exalted and All-Wise, has said (what means): “Allah testifies that there is no one worthy of worship other than Him; the angels and people of knowledge also [testify to such]. He maintains [His creation] in justice. No one has the right to be worshipped except Him, the Almighty, the Ever Wise and Authoritative.” [3:18] It was the most essential aspect of the mission of every prophet and messenger throughout human history, as Allah, the Most High, has said (what means): “And We did indeed send forth to every nation a messenger [proclaiming], ‘You must worship Allah and shun the taaghoot (all things worshipped besides Him.” [16:36] In order to clarify the meanings and requirements of this important testimony, Shaykh al-Islam Muhammad ibn ‘Abdil-Wahhaab (may Allah have Mercy on him) penned a short explanation of the topic called, “Shuroot Laa-ilaaha-ill-Allah,” or: The Required Conditions of the Testimony of Faith. Despite the clarity of this brief discussion and the easy connections to Quranic passages and authentic Hadeeth narrations, some have claimed that this text and its list of seven things is something new! Some of them even go so far as to say it is a bid’ah , a blameworthy innovation! Shaykh Muhammad Amaan al-Jaamee (may Allah have Mercy on him) said in the beginning of his explanation of this text: The conditions of this testimony are seven: knowledge, conviction, sincerity, truthfulness, love, acceptance, and submission. Scholars have deduced these essential components and extracted them directly from texts of the Book and the Sunnah. While they each have textual evidence in the Book and the Sunnah, which everyone reads, Allah provides understanding in the Religion to whomever of His servants He so chooses. He gives some people understanding that He does not give to others. Thus, it is possible for someone to come with something which others view as a new thing, while it is actually not new. It is only viewed as being new by those who did not know it nor attain any level of understanding in Allah’s Religion. Thus, the concept of it being new is merely relative to the vantage point of someone who was not aware of the [presumed] 'new' thing... To aid my brothers and sisters in studying and understanding this important text, Shuroot Laa-ilaaha-ill-Allah (The Required Conditions of the Testimony of Faith), I have prepared this workbook, asking Allah to make it something of benefit for His sincere worshippers. You will find the text of the book, paired with an English translation, laid out over the forthcoming pages, with ample space for notetaking during class. After the text there are helpful resources, including the uninterrupted text, in its original Arabic (both voweled and unvoweled), as well as its uninterrupted English translation. A chain of transmission is also included, as well as some quizzes which can be used to check one’s basic understanding of the text. An answer key is provided on the bottom of page 3. The seven conditions are also presented in poetry form, from the book, Sullam al-Wusool , by Shaykh Haafith al-Hakamee (may Allah have Mercy on him).
