American pikas―those irresistibly cute, hamster-sized mammals that live in rock piles high in the mountains―are remarkably well adapted to living in the harsh alpine zone. Unlike many other alpine mammals, pikas don’t hibernate, instead staying active all winter, living off of plants they harvested and stored in “haystacks” during the short summer. These and many other fascinating insights about pikas can be found in Cony the Pika’s Warming World . The author, Sylvester Allred, is a retired biology professor. He realized that adorable pikas are a natural subject for a children’s book, and a lifetime of teaching science gave Allred the tools he needed to tell the story about the challenges pikas face as the world’s climate warms. Cony the Pika’s Warming World engages young minds in exploring the lives of these amazing animals, while actively pondering questions about the ways our changing climate affects wildlife and natural environments. Cony’s story gives parents and children a path for talking about little pikas and big, thought-provoking issues in an enjoyable, accessible format. •Richly detailed and engaging full-color illustrations fill every page •Amazing insights into how pikas thrive in their harsh environment •The character of Cony makes pikas relatable to all ages without anthropomorphizing Sylvester Allred is a retired professor of biology.
