Autumn leaves are falling and so is the water level at Lake Gibson, revealing the body of a young woman who's been brutally murdered. With the Monroe County Sheriff seriously ill and in the hospital, Sheriff Mack sends his Deputy to ask Ray Curtis of the Alabama Marine Police to assist in the investigation, interrupting an important dinner date with his friend, Lori Sileski. Ray and Lori each have important issues to discuss, but that conversation will have to wait. Ray assembles his team and takes charge of the investigation. Early clues lead the team in multiple directions, including one that takes Ray to Puerto Rico where he makes new friends and reunites with his old friend from a previous investigation, Irishman Fergal Brogan. In addition to dealing with work and his relationship with Lori, Ray has Gavin to take care of, a young neighbor who recently lost his father to ALS, that appears left with no family that cares enough to do right by him. Ray struggles to balance resolving things with Lori, making sure Gavin is cared for, and the heavy load of the investigation which includes dealing with the corruption and gang violence plaguing Puerto Rico, an island recently devastated by Hurricane Maria, still struggling to recover.
