From award-winning author Matt Cost comes a thrilling mystery about Unexplained Aerial Phenomena (UAP) spotted in the skies over Port Essex, Maine. The man—about forty, forearms like small oak trees, with a thick beard—told the bartender at the Pelican Perch, “It came right up out of the ocean, hovered just above the water for about ten seconds, and then was gone .” When Clay Wolfe and Baylee Baker are hired as the local liaisons for a government task force investigating the recent UAP sightings, things get complicated at lightspeed. They’re also hired to find the missing Alice Smith, whose disappearance increasingly appears to have something to do with the UAPs—the source of which might just be a governmental defense contractor named Seagull Aviation. But the more they investigate, the more questions pop up. Who is the assassin gunning for Wolfe and Baker? Who is the mysterious man code-named Arrow? When each witness who has seen one of the UAPs is reported missing, the stakes become sky-high. "Q: What do you get when you combine the camaraderie of the gang in the Oceans Eleven series, the plotting and intrigue of a newish James Bond movie, the hard-boiled romance of an old time Humphrey Bogart flick, and the epic-action-adventure-mayhem of a Marvel comic-book? A: this latest installment in the always-excellent Clay Wolfe detective series is sure to keep the reader entertained and engaged as the latest crime-wave to hit the sunny summer paradise of Port Essex Maine finds its way to the doorstep of the always unflappably-dapper (red-brocade waistcoat and all) Master PI."~Terri Portelli at Bookly Matters "Libraries looking for mysteries that are solidly cemented in realistic scenarios and characters who live and breathe to problem-solve in creative new ways will find Cosmic Trap serves equally well whether purchased in conjunction or after Wolfe Trap, Mind Trap, and Mouse Trap , or as a stand-alone story. When Clay Wolfe and Baylee Baker are hired to be the local liaison for a government task force investigating Unexplained Aerial Phenomena sightings in the skies of Port Essex, things quickly get very complicated. Clay Wolfe is a retired Boston homicide detective returned to his small coastal hometown of Port Essex in Maine to become a PI. He's returned home jaded from the big city streets and to take care of his grandpops who raised him. Baylee Baker starts out as the receptionist for Wolfe, moves on to become lead investigator, and finally, a partner in the PI firm of Wolfe & Baker. Recovering from a bad marriage and trying to find herself, she and Wolfe discover a magnetic attraction to each other, but are afraid to act upon this chemistry until they have a firmer grasp of who they individually are. Everybody in Port Essex has heard the stories of fishermen out on the ocean who have seen these glimmering objects. When the UAP Federal Task Force comes to investigate, Wolfe & Baker are hired for their local knowledge to help with the investigation. It becomes clear that there is something in the sky, but what is it? The lead candidate seems to be aliens, as why would the Chinese or Russians be operating over a coastal Maine town? As people who've seen these UAPs start to come up missing, the stakes become very high. And then Wolfe and Baker are targeted by an Icelandic assassin and her partner. Meanwhile, in the shadows, people with codenames such as Arrow, Washington, and London operate, planning and strategizing who knows what. Wolfe and Baker must harness the strengths of their friends to get to the bottom of what is truly happening. There is Marie Cloutier, the queer newspaper editor, who is tapped into the pulse of Port Essex. Murphy, the ex-IRA fighter turned clammer, who knows the underbelly of the town better than anybody. Crystal, the once upon a time heroin user, with the foul mouth and the heart of gold. And of course, Westy, the former SEAL, who has had Wolfe's back since they were young boys. This thrilling mystery rushes to a dizzying climax as the unknown enemy seems willing to do anything to keep their secret and nobody is safe from their reach. The climax twists, turns, and explodes in a thunderous conclusion.
